Default Althlon XP "Deep Freezer"

He's at it again! (With "Debbies" help of course! (My faithfull OC assistant!)

I had just finished doing the initial testing of my Sempron "Phase Change" rig, and found myself without a "Daily Driver" until I go to AM-2 in the next month or so (That will eventually get the "Phase" treatment, and the Sempron will go back to use as my gaming rig in this case)

So anyways..a bit of a backstory is on order at this point...in anticipation of loosing my NF-3 rig, a few weeks ago, I had dug out my old "Mobile XP 2500+" and put it a Shuttle AN-35N Ultra motherboard with a Thermalright SP-97/80MM Vantec Tornado fan set on 5v (And low noise) for cooling duties. It then went in my old Antec case wich allready had been equipped with the Antec 550watt "True Control" power supply with adjustable voltage rails...perfect for daily use!

Other hardware includes a single 256 stick of KHZ PC3500 BH-5 and a 512MB stick of Geil PC3500 BH-5 in dual channel mode...that had kinda realy surprised me it worked! I was always lead to believe that both sticks needed to be the same size!
A "Borrowed" 9800 Pro from Digtal World handles graphics duties.

I had been doing some benchmark testing with it over the last few days to put in the HWBOT threads, but could not stand to leave the Tornadoe on full blast, and after several failed attempts at trying to build a way of controlling the speed of it with various rheostats, I had pretty much just given up on ever being able to leave it at a decent clockspeed and voltage without going deaf!

So I am staring it at it today when I got home from work (The first truely "Cold" day this year" ) and it struck me as to what I needed to do!

I had some dryer duct, and a 120MM fan, and a window not too far away...

My first version went in the side of the case with the side panel off, but did not work out too well, then I pulled the Tornado off the SP-97 and "Rigged" it in place, but it was just not working out well since the 120 does not fit well or move alot of air.

Of course what you see above is the final version..with the cold air ducting into the rear of the case, and turning the 80MM intake fan in the front of the case around to "Exhaust" and BINGO! Temps that make my heart go pitter-patter

It had failed OCCT testing with every other combo of ducting the cold air I had tried so far with these clock speeds and voltages..and now it happily chugs along in near silence, without freezing the rest of the room to get the temps I want!

I will making a few revisions in the near future to seal the case a bit tighter, and possibly change the the case fans to something even higher flowing... and of course I will eventually "Unleash" the Tornado CPU fan at the full 12volts and try and do some damage to the HWBOT 1MB super pi times for "Team Apex OC team" current records!

ahh the massive amount of spaceballs quotes that could be used here.

I suggest getting a set of those turbine 116cfm 120mm fans. mkade by evercool i think.

they would push a ton of air and get things going. also, if you cu the tubing and put fans within the ducting at certain areas, youll get better flow of air and faster as its being pushed more rather than pulled.

whoa there buddy, are you sure its ok to do that with your RAM? me brother fried 2x512 sticks dual channeled from diff brands. we suspect that it was diff timings and latencies, therefore they died.

now im not an expert on this, but they should go ok for a while, but then could start noticing that your comp will freeze, reset, or just plain ol' BSOD.

peace.

No issues so far..I have been Folding with it all night for a few days and just ran 32MB of Pi at 2535MHZ with 220FSB at 2-3-3-8...and if it does die, It's an old rig that has "Sentimental" value, but realy it's not worth much these days.

It could also be very easily replaced with well under 200$ and carefull shopping on EBAY

Few updates here..got a Rheo (25 watt) for 2$ at a local surplus store with a knob ( I just love the writing on it..looked through a few bins of them before I found the one I wanted)

I had tried numerous times to find a Rheo that could handle the amps of the Tornado without success, they all either didnt work because the ratings was too high (Didn't spin) or too low (Burnt up) and this one was just right and din't cost 15-20$ online.

The only catch is, it looks like it's WW-II era...lol, wich is fine with me, I love nastolgia..it just looks a bit out of place...oh well, I am a OC'er, not a modder...as long as it's functional, I realy don't give a rats ass what it looks like

Oh..and this thing is so freakin HUGE with the knob in place..I can barely shut the door..i kinda bulges out a bit...

One last item..Digi "Modded " the window so It now fits withou having to prop it part way open now that the temps have realy started to drop..I just have too peel the protective cover and put a fan grill on the outside so it doesnt suck in small birds and such

EDIT: Oh..and got the pi times down to 39.078 at 2693MHZ, when the temps drop a bit and I can reach 2.7GHZ, I am sure i'll be able to bust into the 38 sec zone...

Wow, nice find! I love how it says INCREASE! Not to mention the fact you can turn it all the way up to Ludicrous Speed ! I love the duct! It's the same idea I had going on here before I had to tear it down (moving next week!!). I think I'm gonna take it all with me, and erect a wall in the new place to duplicate what I had here.

DEFINITELY a good idea to put a grille out there. As much as I hate birds, I'd hate to see one crawl up there and fudge up your OCing! Awesome clocks for air cooling! Keep up the good work!

Thanks WOS. I was not sure anyone would pay much attention to such a old crusty CPU, but I swear I have more fun with this CPU than any of the new AMD-64 I ever played with!

I have a kick ass program I found the other night when looking for a VMOD for the Shuttle Motherboard...not that I would probably do one, just wanted to see how hard it would be.

Anyways..the name of the program is called "8RDAVCORE" and has just hit my top ten favorite programs of all time (For OC)

My main bitch about this motherboard has been it's "puny" 2.7v limit for ram, especially with the BH-5 I am using now wich craves voltage in the 3v+ range.

Well, it's not a huge increase, but I can now get 2.8v!

It was enough to allow me to get another 5MHZ FSB "Pi" stable (From 220 to 225) and allow me to run Sandra all the way up to 229FSB

You also can tweek CPU V Core and a few other nice little items such as FSB...all in all, enough enough to get me down to 39 seconds flat in Pi!

2684MHZ 224x12 2-3-3-11(Slightly lower CPU speed than before, but FSB rulez in Pi!)

I could have told you about that program Necro, I got my serious start in OCing on that very Shuttle board that you have. I may be able to dig up some more stuff for it.

LOL...well that was the first I had seen of that program, if the hardware were a bit more current, i would have made a thread for it all on it's own!

I have had this board since the old days, just not been using it until my DFI LP died (Hit it with a shot of static electricity one day while working on it, I believe)

But if there are any tips you think you might have come across I might have missed...please do pass them on!
